Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy

Access to the best of the UK’s culture and education

The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural and educational relations.

We build relationships between individuals and organisations in the UK and those in the 110 countries and territories where we are based – relationships which are mutually beneficial and deliver value to all involved – and we work to increase appreciation of, and access to, the UK’s creative ideas and achievements for people all over the world.

The British Council was founded in 1934. Our first office in China opened in Chongqing in 1943, and we worked in China for nine years. We have now been operating in mainland China continuously since 1979. Our Hong Kong centre opened its doors in 1948, making 2008 a celebration of our 60th anniversary.

Today we employ 487 staff at five centres in China and operate as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Beijing, and the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulates-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. We are known as the British Council in Hong Kong.
